We can be part of the solution.

The U.S./Iran Peace-building Dialogue Projectis a multi-media, joint venture with independent filmmakers, academics,
and journalists to travel to Iran and interview a cross-section of
people from across their beautiful country. We will bring back images
and voices in documentary form as well as a series of radio programs
and multi-media presentations to give Americans a virtual cultural
experience and, for many, an introduction to Iran, its people and
culture.

Pending Visa approval, our
plans are to travel to Iran in January 2007, allowing us time to more
fully develop our project and locate additional funding.

PROJECT SUMMARY
In
contrast to the images presented by governments and media, and despite
our cultural differences, Iranian and American people share very
similar core values. The Project Team will interview people from all
sectors of Iranian and American society and initiate an ongoing
dialogue project. Bringing the images and voices of real people to one
another reduces gaps in knowledge and perception and dispels
misconceptions and stereotypes. Through sharing these interviews and
establishing an ongoing dialogue, we hope to nurture a deeper
understanding between the people of the U.S. and Iran, and encourage
diplomatic conflict resolution to lessen the chances of military
intervention.

We plan to share our presentation and findings with a large segment of society through a three-tiered process:
1) nationwide radio and television broadcasts;
2) on-site presentations at school campuses, religious, community and cultural centers across the country; and
3) donation of materials and findings to libraries, schools, and members of Congress.

A UNIQUE PROJECT
The
Project Team will produce a documentary as well as a series of radio
programs. Presentations will include a combination of film,
audio-visuals, and local items to create a virtual cultural experience
for audience participants. A key feature of the project is the
long-term commitment to ongoing programs via the internet, establishing
pen-pal and sister-city programs
based on the participation of volunteers. By beginning at a grass-roots
level, we hope the promotion of knowledge will build a foundation of
understanding across the population that will “trickle up” to those who
implement our foreign policies, fostering more respect and diplomacy in
the approach taken to conflict resolution.

GLOBAL VOICES FOR JUSTICE (GVFJ)
AWARE in Long Beach is a partner with GVFJ, based in Long Beach, California. Our
mission is to make the voices of today’s progressive thinkers widely
accessible—both locally and globally. GVFJ is an independent media
collective that has been working closely with Pacifica Radio (90.7 FM
KPFK in Los Angeles) for four years and has accumulated a significant
archive of audio recordings, including talks by Chalmers Johnson,
Howard Zinn, Norman Finkelstein, Ilan Pappe, Dahr Jamail, and many more
(visit www.gvfj.org).

The goal of
GVFJ in taking on this project is to create a sense of community and
understanding between Americans and Iranians with limited access to
information about each others’ lives or the foreign policies affecting
our two countries. It is critical to bridge this information gap in
order to promote peace and dispel stereotypes and propaganda that
contribute to breakdowns in conflict resolution capabilities.

NON-PROFIT
GVFJ
projects are in affiliation with the International Humanities Center, a
nonprofit public charity exempt from federal income tax under Section
501[c](3) of the Internal Revenue Code. Donations to GVFJ are
tax-deductible to the extent permitted by law (for more information,
visit www.ihcenter.org). Checks can be made payable to GVFJ/IHC, and credit card charges will reflect payment to IHCenter.

SPONSORSHIP
Think about bringing conversations from Iran to people across America . . . .
Think
of the opportunity for promoting peace! Does this sound like a project
you’d like to be a part of? Would you be willing to become a Sponsor of
the U.S./Iran Peace-building Dialogue Project? All donations are
tax-deductible, and GVFJ will be happy to provide you with project
income/expense statement copies at your request.

There are several ways you can participate in this project:
1)    Make a one-time tax-deductible donation
2)    Be a continuing sponsor to support long-term project goals

3)    Become a pen-pal to participate in cross-cultural dialogue

4)    Work with your City Council to initiate a sister-city program with your home town and a city in Iran

5)    Sponsor a presentation at a school, church, library or community center in your area

BUDGET
The cost to launch this project is estimated at $10,000, and support to finance completion and ongoing long-term goals is $4,000 per month. Only with the generous support and donations of visionaries can we make this happen.

Sponsors
at these levels will be provided with a copy of the integrated
audio-visual presentation with special thanks credited at the end, and
your choice of two printed photographs from our trip to Iran:

•  $5000 one-time donation

•  $500 per month for 10 months of sponsorship

•  $250 per month for 20 months of sponsorship

Sponsors at these levels will be provided with a copy of the integrated audio-visual presentation

DAHR JAMAIL
Dahr
Jamail writes for the Inter Press Service, The Asia Times, Truthut.org
and many other outlets. His reports have been published in The Nation,
The Sunday Herald, Islam Online, the Guardian and the Independent, and
his dispatches have been translated into ten languages. On radio as
well as television, Dahr reports for Democracy Now!, the BBC, and
numerous other stations around the globe and is special correspondent
for Flashpoints. He spent eight months in occupied Iraq as one of only
a few independent U.S. journalists in the country. To subscribe to
Dahr’s daily email dispatches, visit dahrjamailiraq.com.

MARK MANNING
Mark
Manning is an independent documentary filmmaker working on a series of
films about Iraq. Part of this series, “Caught in the Crossfire,” will
be screened at the June 2nd event in San Diego
as well on June 4th in Santa Barbara. In 2005, Manning became the only
western unembedded civilian to enter the city of Falluja immediately
following the November 2004 siege, “Operation Phantom Fury.” He lived
with refugees there and experienced the war from their point of view.
Mark’s film currently in production, “The Road to Falluja,” is a
groundbreaking project that documents a post-9/11 environment that led
to a war in Iraq. The film brings to light the common humanity between
two cultures at war, and by doing so presents a real path to peace.

IN MEMORY OF MARC O’REGAN

February 28th, 2006 by aware

SAD NEWS, BUT HIS POSITIVE WORK LIVES ON . . .

On February 4th in Long Beach, Marc O’Regan shared his experiences, sacrifices and work that he volunteered in earthquake devastated Kashmir. Generous AWARE supporters donated $2,600 to Operation Heartbeat on his behalf.

On Friday February 24th, Marc died suddenly of a heart attack while visiting friends in Seattle.

We are particularly saddened because Marc was very special, having turned 180 degrees from being Navy Seal to being a healer (acupuncturist, physician assistant, and message therapist).

Mark Manning (filmmaker of Caught in the Crossfire and upcoming documentary, Road to Falluja) was a close friend of Marc’s for 25 years, and assured me that Marc is still with us. And as my friend Buck said, he had cleaned his karma and it was time to move on . . . mission accomplished.

All the donations raised at the event on February 4th were forwarded to Operation Heartbeat. We will find out what organizations Marc supported, or create a memorial foundation in Marc’s name for future donations. We will post information as soon as it becomes available.

If you would like to be added to AWARE’s email list, please contact Jeanne at 714.357.5424 or aware@burntmail.com, or visit http://www.myspace.com/awarelbcsounds or http://aware.blogs.friendster.com/awareblog to get the latest news on upcoming events.

IMAGES AND VOICES

Marc O’Regan and Hamid Khan Share Moving Photos and Stories

Saturday evening’s event at Viento y Agua Gallery brought out over 100 people from around the Greater Los Angeles and Long Beach area. Marc O’Regan and Hamid Khan described their experiences while showing photos of their recent stays in Kashmir, backed by beautiful ambient ragas and other South Asian music.

When the request for donations was made, everyone stepped up to amazing levels of generosity, making it possible to send a significant donation to Operation Heartbeat.

After questions and answers, local musicians including WuT and Dave Williams’ MajicBulletTheory band played until 10:30 p.m., setting a positive vibe to celebrate our connections with humanity when we take actions to be a part of the solution.

FEB 4TH - PAKISTAN EARTHQUAKE FUNDRAISER

January 25th, 2006 by aware

SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 4TH, 6:00 p.m. at VIENTO Y AGUA GALLERY & COFFEESHOP,

FUNDRAISER TO SUPPORT AID FOR PAKISTAN EARTHQUAKE SURVIVORS

Image hosting by Photobucket

PAKISTAN’S EARTHQUAKE SURVIVORS FACE HARSH WINTER

AWARE is hosting a special fundraiser with Hamid Khan of Pakistan and medical volunteer, Mark O’Regan.

The Pakistan earthquake struck on October 8th at 9:00 a.m. collapsing a majority of structures. Reports estimate that the 7.9 magnitude quake killed 87,000 people, severely injured over 70,000, and left 3.5 million homeless or without food. There have been more than 1,500 aftershocks, some as severe as 5.1 (sources: UPI, Reuters).

A second wave of deaths is feared from landslides and the constant threat of hypothermia and disease. Only with sustained aid can the more than 3.5 million survivors make it through the winter.

When Pakistan’s devastating earthquake hit in early October, international NGO’s went into the country’s most isolated mountain areas of Kashmir. Doctors and other volunteers have been treating injuries ranging from hypothermia and broken bones to gangrenous wounds. They also assist with the basic humanitarian efforts alongside the Pakistani army and volunteers from the U.S., Cuba, Switzerland, Turkey, and other countries.

Marc and Hamid will be sharing many beautiful and moving photos of the devastation, aid, and the amazing Pakistani survivors.

The fundraiser will be held at Viento Y Agua Gallery & Coffeeshop on Saturday, February 4th, at 6:00 p.m., opening with a powerfully healing Tibetan bell meditation. Los Angeles area musicians and poets will be performing throughout the evening until 10:00 p.m., and the presentation by Hamid and Marc will begin at 6:45 p.m. Several artists are donating original work for silent auction (all proceeds to be donated). Come and enjoy an evening of music and poetry, purchase original artwork, and support Pakistan earthquake relief.

The gallery has generously offered their space to us for the evening, and the coffeeshop is donating 10 percent of proceeds on all of their delicious food or beverage items purchased during the event. Viento y Agua Gallery & Coffeeshop is located at 4007 East 4th Street, Long Beach, California 90814 (phone 562.434.1182).
